One of the most difficult decisions that a pet owner can make is the decision to have their beloved pet humanely euthanized. Please know that we are here for you to answer any questions that you might have regarding this sensitive topic. Below are the answers to some common questions that we get. For any additional questions please don’t hesitate to contact our clinic at 814-715-7467.
How do I know when it is time to put my pet to sleep?
This is the type of question that has no one answer that will feel right for every owner but at our office we recommend considering the Rule of Five Good Things as a helpful tool in deciding when it is time to say goodbye to our beloved pets. The Rule of Five Good Things is described as making a list of the top five things that your pet loves to do. Write them down. When he or she can no longer do three or more of them, quality of life has been impacted to a level where many veterinarians would recommend euthanasia. For more ideas on determining a pets quality of life and knowing when “it is time” we recommend reading Dr. Andy Roark’s full article How to Say Goodbye.
Can I be with my pet for their euthanasia?
We want your pets passing to be as peaceful as possible so we encourage owners to be with their pet during euthanasia whenever possible. Before the procedure we will borrow your pet to the back to place an IV catheter. This will insure that you can comfort and hold your pet while the solution is given.
Can you perform the euthanasia in my car?
We are happy to assist you in bringing your pet into the building if they are no longer mobile, but to protect the safety of our staff we no longer offer euthanasia inside of a vehicle.
Do you offer cremation services?
If you are not able to bury your pet then cremation can be a cost-effective alternative. Furlong Funeral Home offers care to your pets once they have passed on. Through their crematory we offer a variety of cremation services to fit whatever your specific need is. They can dispose of the remains for you or you can have a private cremation were their remains will be returned to you in a pawprint tin urn. Additional urn options are available upon request.
